Birmingham New Street

Drivers Access Walkway & Associated Works

Birmingham New Street is the main railway station serving the city of Birmingham, located in the city centre. It is ranked as the busiest in the United Kingdom outside London with 40.1 million annual visitors. New Street was frequently derided as one of the most run down and unwelcoming of all the major stations on the British railway network, with only 52% of the public satisfied. A feasibility study into the redevelopment of the station site was approved on 21 January 2005. This enrolled a complete rebuilding of the street level buildings and refurbishment of the platforms, with track and platform level remaining essentially unchanged. A target date given for completion was 2013 with building work expected to last until at least 2015. Rail Tech Group were awarded a contract from VolkerFitzpatrick to deliver a new driver’s walkway that encompassed various other activities such as cable installations, earthing and bonding. The main project of constructing the new drivers walkway involved building a type approved path, installing a new lighting system with posts, plungers and new signage.
